This is the title tune for the TV program Monkey Business. My aim was to build up a complex jazz big band arrangement but without getting too sophisticated. The arrangement consists of four 8 bar sections that can be played in any order, any number of times and in combinations - a sort of mix & match arrangement. The idea was to build an arrangement that can easily be performed live with the sections in a different order and different combinations each time it is played. The two bar drum breaks are like a bit of breathing space between each section so players or conductor can think which section to play next. The Sax-O-Glue idea came from a time when I catually glued my fingers to the instrument to get over a bad habit of lifting them too far off of the keys.
A deliberate attempt to play dirty and low down. The album features a video for this track, edited from some old clips by John Mister along with some new footage shot at Southampton docks.
All the black and white film was shot at Shepperton film studios and on location at Poland Street, Soho, London. The underwater scenes were filmed at the Sealife Centre in Weymouth, using a clapped out Pennslyvania tenor saxophone kindly lent by Mr Willie Garnet, legendary saxophone repairer and saxophonist.
This was written for a Dry Blackthorn TV commercial, which you can see on the video page. Originally this was called "Definitely" (the slogan was "Definitely a Dry Blackthorn Day"). At the time I was writing a lot of music for ads, nearly all of them for alcohol.
